Product Designer – remote

Looking for a dedicated Product Designer for our client's Design Team. In this remote contract role, you will be involved in building out the first design systems for Higher Ed, working day-to-day in close collaboration with the UX Design Team.
 
Responsibilities:
  • You will bridge the gap between design and development to standardize and implement a scalable design system.
  • You will define, build, and maintain reusable UI components, design guidelines, and tools that empower design and development teams.
  • Your work will ensure that digital products deliver consistent, intuitive, accessible, and visually appealing user experiences.
  • Building and maintaining a robust design system, including reusable UI components, patterns, and guidelines that align with project goals and organizational standards.
  • Implementing and managing tools like Storybook to simplify and enhance the process of integrating design systems into development workflows.
  • Collaborating with design and development teams, ensuring design principles are faithfully implemented in code.
  • Implementing automated testing to ensure UI components meet design, accessibility, and functionality standards.
  • Participating in peer code reviews to uphold quality and adherence to design system principles.
  • Regularly auditing and refining the design system for performance, ensuring scalability and efficiency.
  • Providing regular updates to stakeholders about the state of the design system, planned changes, and their impact on ongoing projects.
  • Collaborate with designers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and implementation of the design system.
  • Create and maintain reusable UI components, ensuring they adhere to accessibility standards like WCAG.
  • Implement and manage tools like Storybook to streamline design system workflows.
  • Write and maintain unit and integration tests for UI components to ensure quality and functionality.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving, balancing business goals with user needs while addressing design system challenges.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends, tools, and best practices to continuously improve the design system.
  • Work within Agile methodologies to deliver iterative and impactful updates to the design system.
  • Working on component libraries. Developing components.
  • Helping building and documenting UI components.
 
Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in software development or design system engineering.
  • 3+ years of front-end development experience, including creating or maintaining design systems.
  • Proficiency in front-end development languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks, particularly Angular; familiarity with React is a plus.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git for managing design system updates.
  • Experience with tools such as Storybook and Figma.
  • Experience in UX design or a background as a designer to enhance ability to contribute as an engineer on the design system is a plus.
  • A strong understanding of accessibility standards like WCAG and how to build compliant components is a must.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, allowing effective interaction with designers, developers, and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies
  • A passion for learning and staying updated on industry trends, tools, and best practices in design systems and front-end development.
  • Experience within Edtech is a plus
  • Candidate will need to have Accessibility Knowledge.
  • Understanding Accessibility to build accessible components and ensure compliance.
